8th Asia Physical Therapy Student Association (APTSA) Congress, 12-13 August 2017
MAHSA University co-hosted the recent 8th APTSA Congress, held on 12-13 August 2017 with the theme “Low Back Pain: A Physiotherapist’s Perspective”. APTSA is the Asia Physical Therapy Student Association (APTSA), a congregation of student associations from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar.
This year, the APTSA Congress was organized by the Malaysia Physical Therapy Student Association (MPTSA). Associate Professor Chan Sook Chin, Dean at the Faculty of Health and Sports Science, MAHSA University, congratulated the organizing committee for putting together an outstanding, high quality programme that exceeded all expectations. The programme, built upon the theme, covered scientific approaches, ideas and innovation and professional presentations to engage delegates. A total of 273 delegates included 168 international students came for the congress.
Keynote addresses by international experts, along with workshops, research presentations and posters from delegates were the highlight of the conference. The speakers were globally renowned and internationally acclaimed experts from Taiwan, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia. Dr Yu-Chen, Chen (Sam) from Taiwan, Mr Robert De Nardis and Dr Steve Milanese from Australia, Madam Umi Budi Rahayu from Indonesia and Dr Gan Eng Cheng from Malaysia. Experts in the field of musculoskeletal, they shared their vast experience and led case study discussions.
Student representatives presented their observations and knowledge of the physical therapy practice in their country. They brought a wealth of knowledge to the conference, comparing similarities and differences in the practice, and even the diversity of patient characteristics.
Needless to say, there was plenty of opportunity to network with national and international speakers and delegates. There were the pre-conference workshops, Cultural Night with performances from delegates, city tours of Kuala Lumpur and plenty of food sessions.
It was the first time the APTSA was held in Malaysia, since its inaugural congress in 2010 in Taiwan. The 8th APTSA was indeed a great success. Congratulations to the organizing committee at MPTSA and to its Chairperson, Ms Liew Hean Mae, who is our very own MAHSA student.
