THE upcoming Raya celebrations will be filled with abundance for Universiti Selangor (Unisel) staff as they will enjoy a month’s bonus.
The Selangor state government has decided to provide a RM2.7mil financial grant for the 887 employees.
The decision was made last week at the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting and was announced at the Shah Alam Unisel campus by state education committee chairman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
“The bonus is to thank and encourage the university’s workforce to perform better,” he said.
Nik Nazmi also said the decision came after Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali’s decision to provide yearly bonuses to all Selangor public servants.
Unisel vice-chancellor Prof Dr Anuar Ahmad said the staff would be glad to receive the grant from the state government considering the recent hike in inflation.
“The recent oil price hike, GST and increased inflation had taken a toll on our staff, especially the lower-ranking ones. We are glad that the money is coming from the state,” he added.
“We are also afraid to increase our fees because of a recent announcement that the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) will be reducing its loans and this could burden our students,” he added.
According to him, they had an intake of 11,300 students this year, compared to 10,000 last year.
But he was still unhappy over the numbers who had picked science and technology subjects.
Dr Anuar said the university’s intake had improved once the ban on enrolling international students was lifted in April.
He also said that students from five faculties had achieved a 3.5 GPA in the last semester, proving the capability of their students and their lecturers.
The university currently has 70 lecturers with PhDs and is targeting to have 70% lecturers with PhDs by 2020.
