First Opticianry Programme in Malaysia

For the first time in Malaysia, Institut Integrasi Utama Avicenna (IIUA) will conduct Opticianry programmes at certificate and diploma levels. Both these courses have received MQA provisional accreditation, approved by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and registration for September 2011 intake is now opened.

The objective of this programme is to produce qualified opticians (diploma) who will be able to perform basic refraction for the correction of refractive error. The graduates will be trained to specialise in vision testing and able to prescribe spectacles. The opticians are forecasts to have bright future in Malaysian market. An optician will also be able to function as an assistant to the Optometrist and Ophthalmologist.

Optical Technologist (certificate) will be trained to acquire optical competencies in ophthalmic lens dispensing and will also have vast knowledge on a variety of ophthalmic lens and spectacle frames in the market.

A statistic released by the Malaysian Optical Council showed a number of 924 optometrist and 2855 registered opticians. The World Optometry Council had stated the ratio of 1:10,000 of population to an eyecare practitioner which still indicates a low number of eyecare practitioners in Malaysia at present.

IIUA is located at TTDI Jaya, Shah Alam. It is the first institution to offer opticianry programmes and is determined to be the best in providing opticianry courses. This institution proudly has senior lecturers with vast experience to handle lectures, labs and clinics. To enhance teaching quality, IIUA have recognised a pool of invited professors in Optometry field.  IIUA has adequate infrastructures; 10 complete cubicles, a library, computer stations, optical and science labs and lecture rooms which is able to carry a number of 100 students in one intake.  

The curriculum of Diploma Opticianry at IIUA not only had been designed to supply relevant knowledge in Opticianry but also emphasized on critical thinking, integrity values and dedicated to equipped graduates into the working world and also determined to groom them to be young entrepreneurs.

Graduates of Diploma Opticianry are able to be employed as Opticians in private optical practices, assistants to optometrist in Eye Clinics or Hospitals, venture into Optical business or function as optic consultant in industries. In addition Diploma Opticianry graduates will also have the chance of pursuing to a higher degree in Optometry in local or international universities.
